As the lead mechanic at Bowen eBikes he raises the island's bike repair scene to rival any shop in Vancouver. Whether you're searching for a qualified bike mechanic, a bike maintenance instructor, or just someone to talk shop; Todd is that seasoned professional you're looking for. Todd Stoughton January 2026 in Bowen eBikes new Bike Maintenance Facility. A Lifelong Journey with Bikes: From Early Days to Island Expertise Todd’s story with bicycles began in his early teens. Long before the days of helicopter parents and structured playdates. As a kid, two wheels cruising expanded his horizons. He discovered then, and continues to say, “It’s the closest thing a human can get to having wings. ” Bikes weren’t just transportation, they were liberation. In his early 20’s he walked into Robson Cycles and landed a mechanic job on the spot. Afterward, he dove into the early mountain bike racing scene on the North Shore. He was also a first-generation bike courier, thriving in the adrenaline of urban deliveries. Through the better part of four decades working in shops from the Lower mainland to Victoria, Todd has served in many roles; Production mechanic, Head mechanic/tech, Assembler, Wheelbuilder, Service manager, Service writer, Instructor and Community cycling event co-ordinator. No matter where he went, he always contributed to a community’s self-reliance. More on this later as I asked him his philosophy on Replace Vs Repair; a bike shop classic question. Expert Certifications and Lifelong Learning Inspired by the latest innovations in bike tech, Todd pursued learning to stay abreast of industry technology growth. He’s been learning both on the job, and from industry recognized courses for decades. Each job is another tool in his belt of knowledge. He's platinum-certified in Shimano S-TEC, completing every module. He's completed equivalents for SRAM Technical University, Specialized e-bike tech, and Bosch systems. Repair vs. Replace Philosophy Daily, Todd weighs repair versus replace parts based on multiple factors. He arrives at the most economical solution for the customer after a review of their bike. He considers things like labor cost, parts availability, and longevity, all to arrive at a decision that is best for the customer. The example he gave me was if a part takes longer to fix, at a shop rate, than the cost of the part, it is almost always worth replacing with a new part. Replacement often ensures longer lasting performance without overcharging for the shop rate of trying to fix something, while not being able to guarantee the life of the fix. But, every job is unique, so this analysis is performed everytime a new fix comes into the shop. "If a fix fails the customer, it's on you," he warned. "You're the last person to touch the customers bike before it leaves the shop, so you better get it right. " I asked him about trust. What would you say to people who say, "Mechanics only replace... --- - Published: 2025-11-04 - Modified: 2025-11-04 - URL: https://bowenebikes.ca/ferry-to-bowen-island/ Construction updates to Vancouvers Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal are included in this article. Tell Your Friends probably does the most upscale breakfasts in the cove. If you want to watch the ferry coming and going, and the Kayak shop in full swing, then this would be the place to go. Sunrise is great from the marina. If you're feeling like a bigger breakfast is in order, or an even earlier day calls, then there's Snug Cafe. Pro tip: Get to the breakfast/lunch/activity joints just before the ferry is arriving for the shortest lineups. Use the app "Bowen Island" to get a fix on the ferry. For the Hikers You've made it here, caffeinated on your first coffee, and are gearing up for some nature. Wow, Nature! You've got some options: All day hikes The All Day Hikers: Mount Gardner; Mount Collins. Check out all of our hiking posts here. Firstly: Mt. Gardner. There are a two main ways to approach this mountain. One walking from Snug Cove, as an out and back, but the second is probably my favourite. Catch the bus and head across the island to Rileys Cidery. Note, the bus won't directly drop you off here, you'll have to walk up from the top of Bowen Bay Road. Head into the trails from behind Rileys Cidery (at the end of the road). Follow the signs that say "To Summit". After Summiting the mountain and walk back to Snug Cove. Personally, I've never been into out and backs, I always want to cover new territory, and this is a great way to do that. For more details on Mount Gardner see the Mt. Gardner specific post. Next: Mt. Collins. My favourite entrance to this, unfortunately walks a narrow path past two homes. While it is a path, it doesn't look like one at first. Don't knock on anyone's door up there, there's thousands of visitors every year so be courteous. See the entrance here off of Scarbourough (google maps). For specific mapping info see Bow Maps. Fares are cheap, and even cheaper if you already rode the bus from Downtown Vancouver to get to Horseshoe Bay. It's because the bus system in Vancouver and on Bowen Island are both run by Translink. Your ticket might still be good on Bowen island to get to Tunstall Bay if you're quick enough. Being quick off the ferry helps, because the buses leave shortly after the ferry arrives. Walk off the ferry before cars unload, and head straight to the bus stop. This will ensure you are not waiting for the next hour for the bus to return from its long trip. Buses leave only about once an hour, and tend to leave right after the ferry docks in Snug Cove. Last note on taking bus 280, is that it does not go to the golf course or Cape Roger Curtis. So if you were hoping for the Cape, you can walk there in about 30min - 45min from Tunstall Beach. If you instead were hoping to go to the golf course, it's a much longer 1. 5hour climb then decent up Sunset Road, then down Cowan Point Drive. Or you might get lucky with our last option. The photos just don't do it justice. North Summit at Eastern Helipad, looking at Lighthouse Park and Vancouver well behind that. The close 'hill' on island, is Cates Hill and the Ecological Reserve. Destinations The majority of people are aiming for the North or South Summit. We highly recommend the North Summit as the south Summit is covered in trees. The South Summit on Bowen Island provides little in the way of a view. People also hike up from the top of Laura Road for the fastest view you can get off the Mountain. The terrain of the Dorman Point Hike is steep with uneven sections on gravel, and a very steep 200m climb at the end on gravel. Metro Vancouver has finished a construction project making stairs in the previous steeper more slippery gravel sections. The hike is worth it as it provides an amazing view looking back to Vancouver. Sit on a bench under arbutus trees, and take in the view while those hiking endorphins kick in. Snug Cove General Store Ruddy Potato Liquor Store Cates Pharmacy Speciality Food Around Island Alderwood Farm Bowen Cider House Rileys Cidery Sunset Cafe Snug Cove General Store They have beer at the back, a wine selection when you walk in, ice for your coolers, fresh fruit, and meat at the back. Just about the best value for your dollar on the island. They also carry seasonally appropriate gear, like turkey basters and roasting tins for thanks giving, or coolers for the summer time. Ruddy Potato Whole Foods Market Fresh product, a bakery, coffee shop, ice, specality foods, and so much. If you're looking for that one ingredient in a dish and can't find it anywhere else, this might be the place for you. A little more expensive, but dang is it a pleasant shopping experience. If you're looking for kombucha on tap, this is the place (sometimes, when it's in season). Snug Cove Liquor Store A vast selection of cold beers, speciality beers, hard liquors, vodkas, wines, and sparkling wines for a summer barbecue. The only liquor only store on the island. Cates Pharmacy Just beside the Ruddy Potato, it's the only pharmacy on the island. Paper products, to sunscreen, to medicine, gift cards and a proper pharmacy this is the place to go. Alderwood Farm Just past mid island, prepare for a steep driveway into some of the best tasting pies on the island. When the kitchen is running, make sure to take advantage of their soups, pies, pizza's, ice cream, and other speciality goods. Coming here is an experience to be had especially if you're only here once. Bowen Cider House They have fully released ciders on Bowen Island. A great stop half way across the island before continuing on. Rileys Cidery With over a thousand different types of apples on the property, this is a place worth visiting, even if you're not into cider. A great cider house, with a view, and a 1-2hr pop off the Mt. Gardner trail system if you're hiking. Sometimes people come here on the bus, and hike back towards Snug Cove. From waterfalls spontaneously appearing (I'll tell you where) to cozy pubs, explore a list of indoor activities and unique spots both inside and out. This article tells you about the following: Arts Tour Remote Retaurants Outdoor Walks (Mostly Covered by trees) Cider Tours Pubs and fires Spontaneous Waterfalls Take an Art Tour Bowen Island is the lucky home to many artists, aspiring artists, and art galleries. A great way to spend a wet day is by exploring the creative hubs of Bowen. After walking off the ferry you'll reach The Hearth Gallery first, then just up the road you'll find Catching Stars and then off to Artisan Square where you can linger in Arts Pacific Gallery to enjoy some local creativity! Bonus Activity: Want to participate in the arts? The Burrow on Bowen Island makes a great indoor activity, hosts classes, art related talks, and more. Needs to be booked in advance. See their calendar at the link for more info. Remote Restaurants Leaving Snug Cove, you have one choice. The Shed at the golf course; a Mexican inspired restaurant; to which I can't recommend the Magic Mushroom Tacos enough. If you tough out the course in the rain, ordering in advance from hole 9 make all the difference in the world to warm up before leaving back to Snug Cove. Outdoor Walks The Sea Walk (aka the Whale Trail) For an invigorating afternoon walk in the rain, we'd suggest the Whale Trail. In Cape Roger Curtis (the south western side of the island), you'll follow the trail through the trees (which offer some drip protection), and the chance to spot a whale. Legend has it that they're more likely to surface on a rainy day. At the end of the hike is the lighthouse; and with a bench covered by a tree shelter, makes for a great hangout space (for a little while at least). The reason the Whale Trail goes by two names is the 'BC Whale Trail' is formed by many smaller hikes along the Pacific Facing BC front across many island and the main land. Our Sea Walk is one of those smaller hikes. Cider Tours You don't need sunshine outside to light up your insides! Both Riley's Cidery and Bowen Cider House offer cider tastings even when the skies are grey. Bowen Cider House Experience the passion and dedication of their family-run Cidery. Great tasting room. Bonus Activity if your timing is lucky: Part of the experience here is Meadowbrook Market. A butchery the 7. 5 acres; truly allows for farm to table experiences. Butchery classes are available from time to time, but need to be booked in advance. Living on Bowen Island for a month? Order a pig in advance. Rileys Cidery Open now Thursday to Monday (may have changed recently) requires booking in advance, especially for those busy weekend days due to limited capacity. Can you guess where it is? (Hint: it's Killarney Lake) Just follow the pink trail once you're off the ferry. Turn Right at the bike shop, Left onto the first trail, Right at the waterfall along the roadway, left into a parking lot to go to the beaver damn 30min by foot, 15min by car or bike, and you can get to Killarney Lake. Killarney Lake is one of the flatter hikes on the island, and a great place to start! Walk off the ferry and within a few short minutes you can be on a trail in the trees. A great thing to do, especially with kids. The Directions After you dock, walk straight & take your first right at Cardena Drive (the library is on the corner). Go just past the Visitors Center and enter the Crippen Regional Park trail behind it, on your left. Follow the trail past the Bowen Island Memorial Gardens and you'll start to hear the rush of a waterfall on your right. Walk down to Bridal Veil Falls. You'll see more flow in December to April months, and less in the summer months. When you reach the next road (Miller), you've got two options If walking to Killarney Lake You can either cross over and loop through the meadow, past the dog park, or turn right and walk along Miller about a block to enter the trailhead at the parking lot across from Melmore Rd. From here, just follow the path (and signs) to the lake! If biking to Killarney Lake Go right at the roadway just after the falls. Take the left into a gravel parking lot. The East side of Killarney Lake is for hikers only, so once you're into Crippen park, make sure to keep left around the lake. There's a few cliffs and bridges that aren't bike friendly. These have all been marked red on the map above. If you're on a road bike (or just avoiding the gravel), you'll want to go straight up Grafton Road, and turn right at the elementary school. The first hill is challenging, but it's mostly downhill after that towards the lake. What to Expect During the 9km round-trip you'll pass the waterfall, a beaver dam and maybe even spot a few deer. The lake itself is about 30 minutes from the ferry on foot, and the loop around it takes an hour. So you can expect at least 2 hours of peace among the trees. While the serene waters of Killarney can look inviting, swimming isn't recommended for humans or furry friends as the lake is home to leeches. If you want or need a physical map to Killarney Lake on Bowen Island, then make sure to pop by Bowen eBikes and grab one. We're also super useful in giving out directions. There are no taxi's or uber/lifts on island, so you'll need to decide how to get around Bowen Island. Walk on Passengers If you've shown up without a way to get around there are a few options on island: Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) / Golf Cart Electric Bikes Regular Bikes Hitch Hiking (Free) Shuttle Bus Bowen Lift (hitchhiking) Low Speed Vehicle / Golf Cart Rent a Golf Cart from Bowen eBikes Perhaps the most exciting way to get around is by renting a LSV from Bowen eBikes. LSV's are different from Golf Carts, in that they have mirrors, signal lights, licence plates, and seatbelts. LSV's are road legal, and are great for groups of 4 looking to enjoy the day. Electric Bikes Bowen eBikes is currently the only operation to offer eBikes for rent. You can book in advance online using their website, or walk up day of for rentals. Even if you aren't looking to use a bike, they have great information on where to go and what to do for most of the year. Regular Bikes Bowen eBikes does not currently offer regular pedal bikes. If you do bring a bike, make sure to pack a spare tube. If you get into trouble you can always call Bowen eBikes for an assist. While they do charge you for a pickup, or parts on the road, they will do their best to help and get you back on the ferry. Hitch Hiking (free) We're fortunate to live on a safe island where most people just want to help. Bowen LIFT helps riders and drivers connect across the island; use their app, or wait by one of their green thumbs up signs. Shuttle Bus The 282 only operates on weekends. We have 3 bus routes; the 280, 281, 282. The 82 has limited service though and only operates on weekends. If you're trying to get to Cape Roger Curtis, or the Golf Course, you'll need to hitch hike, use a bike or LSV, or walk. There are no taxi's on island. Unique Rules of the Road Unique to Bowen Island is the 40km/hr speed limit. This allows for some unique ways to get around the island including Low Speed Vehicles. There are many blind corners, steep hills, and wild deer at sunset or night so drive with extra caution at these times. Driving On Bowen Island Warning for all drivers; if you come here, make sure to have a full tank of gas, especially in the summer times. The Bowen Island Gas Station can restrict fuelling of vehicles to $50 max/day OR may cut off non-residents entirely if there is a fuel shortage. This happens at least a few weekends a summer. Why might the gas station run out of fuel? With limited storage on Bowen Island, and a dangerous goods ferry sailing but once a week on Wednesday, there can be more demand for fuel than we can store over a single weekend... --- - Published: 2024-03-08 - Modified: 2025-09-25 - URL: https://bowenebikes.ca/bowen-island-things-to-do/ There are many things to do on Bowen Island. The short answer is they're rarely here; but I'm going to talk about when they do come, and how they get here. A sighting is reported about once every 5 years. I haven't heard of any encounters in the past 5 years on Bowen Island. Some would say we're overdue, others would say I don't know how statistics work. I'd give them 50/50 they're both right. Bears have been sighted swimming off BC Ferries. I've seen a bear swimming while boating about 200m off shore from Whyte Cliff Park, 2km east of Bowen Island. The practicalities of a Bear Swimming to Bowen Island Did you know bears can swim long distances? Polar Bears can swim over 600 kilometers (400 miles). But, I'd imagine the 2km between Whytecliff Park and Bowen Island would be easy enough for a Black Bear. Even the currents wouldn't stop a bear from visiting, just slow it down. A falling tide can last 4-8 hours would consist of the currents pushing the poor bears out into the Strait of Georgia at about 1-3km/hr while the black bear was swimming about 4-8km/hr. I have my doubts about the top end speed as I'd imagine that's more 'sprinting' rather than a sustained effort of endurance travelling. Still though, the 1km/hr difference would get the bear here in 2 hours. I'd be theorizing, but likely the bears are smart enough to swim with the currents, rather than against them. Or, perhaps all the bears that ended up on Bowen Island, started by going to Sunshine coast, and ended up drifting off course. So it turns out we only have tidally confused bears on Bowen Island. Historical Sightings Ok so when have these bears shown up? Our research team (my wife) found a couple of articles. The latest bear was here in 2020, and prior to that in 2010 inside of Snug Cove. The 2010 bear, knocked down fences in search of food. The school tells children to walk in pairs for safety. A completely unrelated image of a pair of Twix bars. When is the next one coming? Most of us who've grown up in British Columbia have learned, to store garbage in secure tightly closing bins, clean barbecues after use, and pick fruit from trees early, allowing it to ripen inside. More about bear safety on the local municipalities website. But, really, the more annoying thing on the island is Squirrels eating all of your fruit before it's ready, and the crows or ravens knocking your organics over before the weekly Wednesday pickup. I've unfortunately seen the results of a spooked deer deciding to jump on an unlucky person. So while bears, may be the biggest animal in the kingdom on Bowen, the chances are rare that you'll see one. We're still living in paradise here. If you want to come see the wilds of Bowen Island for yourself, reach out and we'd be happy to help. --- - Published: 2024-03-05 - Modified: 2025-11-04 - URL: https://bowenebikes.ca/2024-how-to-get-to-bowen-island-by-car/ Note: The Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal is currently open, but loading procedures have changed due to construction. Alternative Pages You Could Consider: Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to Bowen Island (Snug Cove) after 2025 Bowen Island (Snug Cove) To Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) You think driving on the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island would be straight forward, but it's a little confusing the first time. This is a great post for anyone travelling from Vancouver to Bowen Island for the first time, and it will walk you through the complicated lineup situation. Getting to the Payment Gate After turning off Highway 99 and following the signs for Ferries, keep to the right most lane. If you see cars backed up in the middle or left most lanes, they are most likely waiting for Naniamo or Langdale. Keeping to the right most lane gets you to the payment gate where there is usually a smaller lineup of vehicles. During the day time, you will be going through gate 8 on the right. For the 10:20pm ferry, this can switch to the left or Gate 3 or 4. We're in line for Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island, preparing to pay after this truck. After Payment Follow the Left most Lane Once you're through the payment gate, keep to the left most lane one until the first stop sign. There are speed bumps all the way down, but luckily BC ferries gives us the long roller speed bumps instead of the short and choppy bumps compared to the other lanes. Sit back and enjoy a little schadenfreude as you see other vehicles racing you down in lanes 2-7, but going the same speed and being bounced into oblivion. Just stick in that lane one until you're past the stop sign. If you see vehicles waiting, you may be stuck waiting for another ferry to unload, but you should still make your sailing if they've let you through the first payment gate. After the stop sign drive under the tower on the right Just beyond the stop sign, look for the tower on the right (lanes 61-72). Just after the stop sign you're looking for that tower on your right and the signs that say lanes 61-72. Drive in either when directed, or after stopping. If you're a larger over-height vehicle, or have a long trailer you may have been directed elsewhere. If you are a normal size vehicle, under 6' and less than 20', then drive on under the overhead tower. Drive into the Bowen Island Loading area When inside, look for lane 69, but if it's full, go one to the right or left, and keep this pattern up. Today, I drove into lane 64 because all other lanes were full. The important thing is that you don't block the back area where cars need to go behind you. When lane 69 is full, just keep filling the lane next to it, and so on. Today, lanes 65-72... --- - Published: 2024-03-04 - Modified: 2025-05-17 - URL: https://bowenebikes.ca/10-bowen-island-instagram-shots/ Snap some sweet Bowen Photos without breaking a sweat. There are no busses that head out here yet, so it's hitch hiking, or biking, or driving for this one. We'll cover both in this post. Multi-use Trails Cyclists do not have the right of way on multi-use trails. You must yield to horses and pedestrians. If you are on a class 2 or 3 eBike, you cannot use a multi-use trail. All of our Bowen eBikes are class 1, so you are good to cycle on multi-use trails, so long as you give way to others on the trail. This right of way is especially important around Killarney Lake, where there are many multi-use trails. The Red Trails are not multi-use trails. Please hike - don't cycle on these. The green trails are multi-use trails. As always, this map is an artistic rendering that is not to scale, and trails may not be accurate in their representation. Cycling on the road As my cycling coach used to say, CARS ALWAYS WIN. Even though you may have the right to a lane on a bike, a vehicle is a heavy object. It doesn't matter if you are in the right, cars just always 'win'. Please cycle single file on the right hand side of the road, especially on Grafton Road and Adams Road. The highlighted route in PINK shows both Adams Road and Grafton Road. As always, this map is an artistic rendering that is not to scale, and trails may not be accurate in their representation. This is especially important on Grafton and Adams road as there is NO SHOULDER. As a cyclist, you have the responsibility to obey all traffic laws; therefore, you are then provided the right to use a road lane. If you do not share the road, or provide necessary space for cars to pass you, you lose this right. Of course, as my cycling coach would say, "cars always win". Cycling on private property or Parking the bikes and hiking over private property Hiking and cycling on private property, where you do not have permission to be there, is trespassing, even when it looks like a park. There are many clearly marked trails on Bowen Island. Please stick to them. We encourage legal exploration and adventure on Bowen Island. There is plenty of that to be had. The locals do not like you trespassing on their land at all: some don't mind it, many loathe it. Please don't do it, ever. There are many places to trespass on Bowen Island, so please don't do it. As always, this map is an artistic rendering that is not to scale, and trails may not be accurate in their representation. Accidents Happen If you have an accident with a parked vehicle, firstly, make sure that you are OK and that you've checked in with the driver to make sure they are OK. You should make sure to take pictures of any damage that has occurred to either the car or the bike. Make... --- - Published: 2020-07-19 - Modified: 2024-09-15 - URL: https://bowenebikes.ca/how-long-does-it-take-to-cycle-around-bowen-island/ Short Answer: Many many hours Not so short answer: cycling on Bowen Island, is relaxing, wonderful, and hilly. To ride on every road it's about 5 hours if you're a pro-cyclist, and 10-20 hours if you're not a pro-cyclist to cycle every road on Bowen Island. Bowen Island About the size of Manhattan, or Richmond, and only 1/100th the road network, Bowen Island stretches with its road like tendrils expanding from the Snug Cove area to various points on the Island. Roads follow the terrain, bending and weaving, never going exactly straight to where you want to go. This is what makes cycling on Bowen Island so appealing. You can always seem to find a new bend in the road, twist of the shoreline, path into the forest, and new beaches. The pink roads are all of our main roads, the grey roads are all the secondary roads. No ring-road encompasses all of Bowen Island. As you do begin your trek around the island, there is one very important road to keep in mind. Adams / Grafton. (Highlighted in Pink) The Adams & Grafton road has no shoulder. Cars travel at a blazing 40km/hr here and it's the most dangerous for cyclists. We seriously recommend pulling off to the side should a ferry line up of cars start following you in either direction. Final Tips Taken from Google Satellite View. You can see that the roads almost appear to connect. It's not true, they do not. Do not believe Google Maps Satellite View, when it says there is a road that connects the Smugglers Cove Road, Billington Road, and Woods Road on the North East side of Bowen Island. It's private property, and bush whacking for 400-500m with your bike. It looks like a small break in the road, but it's a lot further than that. --- --- ## Products - Published: 2025-10-04 - Modified: 2025-10-04 - URL: https://bowenebikes.ca/product/lumina-micro-and-vmax-combo-front-and-rear/ - Price: 89.49 CAD Note: The NiteRider® Lumina™ Micro 650 is shipped from the factory in Travel Lock Out Mode.
